I recently did a study on Ezekiel Chapter 26 and I found it quiet interesting. So I thought that I would share what I found with you.
Ezekiel 26 prophetically describes the fall of the Phoenician city of Tyre. The city of Tyre was the trading center of the Mediterranean Sea and was what we would probably consider to be the NYC of today. The people of Tyre were the founders of a much better known city know as Carthage and the Carthaginians considered the city of Tyre to be their father city.
Ezekiel describes several specific prophecies about the destruction of Tyre. Here are a list of the prophecies.
1. Many nations would come against it.
2. Nebuchadnezzar, King of Babylon, would lay siege to it.
3. It would be thrown into the sea
4. It would be nothing more than a rock
5. Would be used to dry fishing nets.
6. The City would never be rebuilt
We see that starting in 585 BC the King of Babylon laid siege to the City of Tyre. This siege lasted for 13 years before the mainland part of the city fell to the Babylonians. Babylonian Army was made up of people from all kinds of nations that it had already conquered. So in one way, many nations of the world came against Tyre.
Later we see a man by the name of Alexander the Great. He comes against the city of Tyre which has been moved from the mainland to an island approximately a half mile out to sea from the original city. Alexander built a cause way into the channel using the ruins of the old mainland city. Thus fulfilling the prophecy that Tyre would be thrown into the sea. Also, in the process they had scrapped the land clean leaving bare rock.
The city would be built a couple more times only for another army to come along and cut it down. So again the armies of the Nations prophecy is fulfilled. Here are some armies that destroyed Tyre, Babylonian, Greeks, Romans, Crusaders, and Muslims. For many years after 1290 BC the city lay in ruin. Only being used by local fisherman to dry their nets on the rocks. However, if you look at this site today, you will see that a city did spring up. But it is not Tyre but a Lebanese City by the name of Sour. When I looked at this city today, what stood out to me was a pointer on the map that was labeled "ruins of Tyre".
I just found this interesting and I hope that you enjoy this little bit of information as much as I have. God Bless you my friends and may you endure to the end!
